Space Planning - Why it’s important!

Without space planning you can end up with a
poorly designed space that is awkward and even frustrating to be in.

Space planning - is creating a functional layout where the spaces within your room commingle seamlessly - it is the core of any interior design.  This process involves utilizing of all available space in an efficient and effective manner according to the client’s special needs and requirements.

To do this we create a floor plan! A floor plan is a drawing or visual representation of a space from a bird’s eye view. It is drawn to scale with the actual measurements of the space, including walls, windows, and openings. Without space planning and floor plans, you can end up with a poorly designed space that is awkward and even frustrating to be in.

The types of spaces in a specific home or building generally fall into 4 categories:

  • Social (living room or dining area)

  • Private (bedroom)

  • Work (home office)

  • Storage (closet, shelving, etc.)

Points to consider when space planning:

  • What is the purpose of the room? Does it serve more than one function?

  • What kind of mood of feeling do you want to convey in the space? Cozy and relaxed or vibrant and energetic?

  • How many people will be using the space?

  • What existing furniture or accessories will remain in the room if any?

  • How do you move around in the room?

Can your space be more functional, but you can’t quite figure out how to make it work?

Are you thinking of buying new furniture and have asked yourself -
“Will this fit or even work in here” ?

Thinking of re-arranging your space to fit a home office?
